Delaying graduation
I delayed my graduation in order to get the opportunity to write my thesis at the Phillips Alliance Office - a sneak preview in a multinational at a strategic level. In meetings headed by Mr. Gerard Kleiserlee I learnt the basis for every successful business. New promising business proposals are only approved if the financial basis is solid and healthy.
And secondly the choice I made as a consultant to understand, facilitate and accelerate the complex financial accounting system of a Bank. This was a challenging and rewarding early business experience for me.

Blunder
Delegate without help
Working as a project leader I delegated tasks without considering if help was needed. I discovered, just before the deadline that the results were not forthcoming. This led to a lot of irritation and cost a lot of time to set right. I learnt a valuable lesson in leadership: if you delegate tasks to someone make sure he/she has the appropriate skills and means for these tasks, and help him/her along the way.

Result within a day
Delivering a Finance Strategy in one day, with finance managers that had flown in from all over the world. We delivered a cutting edge product which satisfied our client.

Be realistic
In difficult situations, avoid painting a more optimistic picture than the situation merits.
Especially in these situations it is imperative to be realistic.

Be yourself
This is an advice my mother gave to me as a child. Often, I can hear my mother whisper in my ear: "No matter where you are, always be yourself!”
